우연한 기회에 가게 된 퀸시 존스 내한공연. 퀸시 존스를 마이클 잭슨 곡의 작곡자 겸 제작자로 알고 있던 나로서는 그의 내한공연이 쉽게 와닿지 않았다. 그가 노래를 부르기라도 했단 말인가? 대략 인터넷으로 검색해보니 퀸시 존스와 이런 저런 연을 맺고 있는 뮤지션들이 그의 80회 생일을 축하하는 공연을 연단다. 그럼 그렇지. 공짜표가 이렇게 쉽게 올리가 없다. 어쨌든 간만에 귀 좀 호강시켜주러 올림픽공원으로 나섰다.
같이 간 선배와 간단하게 요기한 후 들어 선 공연장에서 놀란건 두가지. VIP석이 2층에도 있다는 것, 그리고 생각보다 감동이 적었던 공연 내용이다. 퀸시 존스 사단의 콘서트라고 이해는 하지만, 음악적 일관성 없이 걸그룹에서 베테랑 가수까지 각자 한두곡씩만 부르고 퇴장하는건 보기에 좀 민망했다. 좋게 말하면 다양한 음악을 들을 수 있었던 기회였지만. 게다가 마지막에 츨연진이 다 나와서 함께 불렀던 'We are the world'도... 좀 그랬다. 물론 퀸시 존스의 대표적인 히트곡인건 안다. 그냥 지금이 쌍팔년도인지 살짝 착각이 들었을 뿐. 그러고 보니 공연의 제목이 Quincy Jones The 80th Celebration Live in Korea다. 그래 퀸시 할아버지의 팔순잔치였던게다. 그걸 CJ E&M이 후원했을 뿐이고.
이 공연에서 귀가 번쩍 뜨이게 한 가수가 있었다. 이름은 Siedah Garrett. 붉은 원피스의 늘씬한 몸매가 인상적이었던 그녀는 관객들의 자발적인 기립박수를 받은 유일한 가수였다. 그녀가부른 'Man in the mirror'는 비스듬히 걸터 앉았던 나도 박수를 치고 절로 어깨를 들썩이게 했다. 노래는 메시지라는 평범한 진리를 몸소 보여줬다고나 할까? 감동적인 노래실력에 스마트폰으로 검색해 보니 마이클 잭슨의 백보컬로 유명했던 탓에 히트곡은 마이클 잭슨과 함께 부른 'I just can't stop loving you'가 눈에 들어왔다. 그 감미로운 목소리의 주인공이 바로 Siedah Garrett이었던거다.
집에 오는 길에 Siedah Garrett이 부른 노래를 유튜브에서 반복해서 들었다. 마이클 잭슨을 회상하며 부른 이 동영상은 오늘 현장에서 받았던 전율만큼은 아니지만 충분히 그녀의 진정성을 보여주지 않았나 싶다. 야구도 그렇지만, 노래도 현장에서의 감동을 그대로 전달해 주는 기술은 존재하지 않는 듯 하다.
참고로 개인적으로 꼽는 마이클 잭슨 최고의 노래는 'Man in the mirror'다.
